Odessus

Odessus (modern Varna) was founded as a Greek apoikia (colonial trading post) by Miletian settlers in the second quarter of the 6th century BC, superimposed on an earlier Thracian settlement [1]. Archaeological evidence, including pottery dated to 600–575 BC, confirms the earliest Greek presence [1]. According to the periegete Pseudo-Scymnus, the colony was established during the reign of Astyages (c. 572–570 BC) [1]. The settlement grew into one of the principal Greek cities in Thrace.
