Lubaantun Archaeological Reserve

Lubaantun, meaning 'Place of Fallen Stones,' is a Late Classic Maya city in Belize's Toledo District, occupied from about 730 to 890 AD before being abandoned. Its architecture is distinctive: structures use mortar-less black slate blocks with rounded corner stones, built in stepped tiers. The elevated site served as an administrative centre for trade regulation, with 11 structures surrounding 5 plazas and 3 ball courts for roughly 600 residents. Excavations yielded large numbers of miniature ceramic figurines and whistles, but notably no carved stelae.
