Lamanai Archaeological Reserve

Lamanai is a Maya temple complex in Belize with one of the longest continuous occupations in the Maya world, spanning roughly 3,000 years from the Early Preclassic period (c. 3000 BC) through the Spanish and British colonial eras into the 20th century [1]. Unlike most Classic-period sites in the southern Maya lowlands, Lamanai was not abandoned at the end of the 10th century AD [1]. The site's pre-Columbian name, recorded as Lam'an'ain in Maya inscriptions, was documented by early Spanish missionaries over 500 years ago [1].
