A medieval Armenian monastery originally founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator, with the main cathedral built in 1215 under the Zakarid generals. Nearly half of the complex's 20+ buildings are carved directly into the mountainside, including churches, tombs, and chapels with domed ceilings. Named Geghardavank ('Monastery of the Spear') for housing the lance said to have wounded Christ, brought to Armenia by Apostle Thaddeus. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it represents the peak of Armenian medieval rock-cut architecture with intricate carvings of animals, flora, and geometric patterns.
