Erebuni Fortress

Erebuni Fortress is an Urartian fortified city in Yerevan, Armenia, situated 1,017 metres above sea level[1]. Founded by King Argishti I, it served as a military stronghold protecting the kingdom's northern borders and was designed as a great administrative and religious centre[2]. One of the most important political, economic and cultural centers of the vast Urartian kingdom, it was one of several fortresses built along the northern border[1]. The modern city of Yerevan derives its name from Erebuni[1].
