The London to Lewes Way is a 71 km (44 mi) Roman road built in the 1st century AD, connecting Watling Street at Peckham to Lewes in Sussex [1]. The route passes through Beckenham and West Wickham before crossing the North Downs above Titsey on the Surrey-Kent border [1]. The road is overlain by Edenbridge High Street and continues across Ashdown Forest, where the grassy vegetation lining its silted ditches visibly contrasts with surrounding heather in aerial photographs [1]. It descends through Piltdown to Lewes, linking with the Sussex Greensand Way at Barcombe Mills [1].
