Acaray is an ancient fortress in the Huaura River Valley on Peru's near north coast [1]. The impressive structure sits atop three hilltops, each surrounded by perimeter defensive walls featuring parapets and bastions [2]. Radio carbon dating indicates the fortress was originally constructed during the Early Horizon period around 900-200 BC, with later occupation during the Late Intermediate Period, before being abandoned between 1000-1470 AD [3]. Excavations revealed that activities at Acaray extended beyond defensive purposes, yielding evidence of both conflict and ritual activities [4][5].
