Roman Middlewich (c. 1st–5th century AD) was established by Romans as Salinae, named for its salt deposits, making it one of the major Roman salt production centers in Britain[1]. The settlement straddles the King Street fault, with King Street itself forming part of this geological feature[1]. A Roman fort was constructed at Harbutts Field to the north of the town, with excavations revealing a well and segments of preserved Roman road[1]. Archaeological work in 2004 at Buckley's Field uncovered additional evidence of Roman occupation[1]. Middlewich served as a junction for seven major Roman roads and is believed to have been known as Medius Vicus[1]. King Street, a major Roman road linking Middlewich with Northwich, has been suggested as a possible initial route for the Roman conquest of northwestern England, though the scarcity of early Flavian samian pottery suggests this is unlikely[1].
