The Templo Mayor was the main temple of the Mexica people in their capital city of Tenōchtitlan, now Mexico City [1]. Its architectural style belongs to the late Postclassic period of Mesoamerica [1]. The temple was called Huēyi Teōcalli in Nahuatl [1]. It was dedicated simultaneously to Huitzilopochtli, god of war, and Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture, each with a shrine at the pyramid's top and separate staircases [1]. The central spire was devoted to Quetzalcoatl as the wind god Ehecatl [1]. Measuring approximately 100 by 80 m at its base, it dominated the Sacred Precinct [1]. Construction began after 1325 and was rebuilt six times [1]. The Spanish destroyed it in 1521; the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral was built on its site [1].
