Ancient city-kingdom in present-day Larnaca, Cyprus, established by Mycenaean Achaean settlers in the 13th century BC. After destruction around 1200 BC, the town was rebuilt on a larger scale with Cyclopean walls. Phoenicians arrived in the late 9th century BC and erected a grand Temple to Astarte (35 x 22 m) on the foundations of a Mycenaean predecessor. A Phoenician military harbour from the 5th century BC was discovered in 1987. Kition is the birthplace of Zeno of Citium (c. 334 BC), founder of Stoic philosophy.
