One of the three main Mycenaean centers in the Argolid alongside Mycenae and Tiryns, situated on a 270-meter conical hill -- the highest Mycenaean acropolis. Its massive cyclopean wall extends 450 meters in length, stands 5-7 meters wide, and survives up to 7 meters high in places. Excavations beginning in 1939 uncovered two monumental gateways, workshops with jewelry-making molds, Linear B inscriptions on stirrup jars, and decorated interior spaces. A devastating earthquake at the end of the 13th century BC destroyed the citadel, leaving a crushed human skeleton among the ruins. The rich necropolis at neighboring Dendra further attests to its significance.
