Pentre Ifan is the largest and best-preserved Neolithic dolmen in Wales, dating to around 3500 BC. Located in Nevern, Pembrokeshire, its massive capstone is approximately 5m long and appears precariously balanced atop three upright stones, where it has remained for over 5,000 years. Excavations in 1936-37 and 1958-59 by William Grimes revealed rows of ritual pits predating the mound. The stones originate from the nearby Preseli Hills, the same source as Stonehenge's bluestones. Maintained by Cadw, it was among the first Welsh monuments protected under the Ancient Monuments Protection Act 1882.
