Painted Rock Petroglyph Site

The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site near Gila Bend, Arizona, is the largest known petroglyph concentration in the region with approximately 800 images pecked onto weathered basalt boulders overlaying a granite outcrop. The petroglyphs include Western Archaic Style images (7500 BC to AD 1) and Gila Style Hohokam designs (300 BC to AD 1450). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, the site is considered sacred by Native American tribes in southern Arizona. The 1775 Anza expedition camped nearby on its route to California.
