Huerfano Butte (Arizona)

Huerfano Butte ("Orphan Butte") is a prehistoric Hohokam archaeological site on the western flank of the Santa Rita Mountains in Pima County, Arizona, utilized from c. 1100 CE. The granite outcrops feature about fifty bedrock mortars, metates, and approximately two dozen petroglyphs painted in red hematite depicting human and animal forms and concentric circles. In 1965, Tani Bahti discovered a pottery jar containing over 1,450 turquoise beads and pendants plus carved glycimeris shell artifacts, now housed at the Arizona State Museum. The site is restricted access to protect its cultural resources.
