Parion

Parion (Parium) was an ancient Greek city founded c. 709 BC on the coast of the Hellespont in modern Kemer, Canakkale Province, Turkey. Excavations since 2005 have uncovered around 200 graves in the necropolis, including a 2,200-year-old sarcophagus containing golden earrings depicting Eros, rings, and crown fragments -- its occupant dubbed the 'Princess of Parion'. A 2,400-year-old bronze amphora decorated with Dionysian scenes, a Phrygian-language marble inscription, and 2,000-year-old children's toys were also discovered. The site includes a theatre, odeon, and Roman baths, reflecting Parion's importance as a major customs station on the route to Constantinople.
