Runestones of Sweden

(4th - 12th c.) Runestones are raised stones, boulders, or bedrock carvings featuring runic inscriptions, primarily erected as memorials to deceased men. [1] The tradition began in the 4th century and continued into the 12th century, with most dating from the late Viking Age. [1] Concentrated in Scandinavia, especially Sweden, they also appear in regions visited by Norse Vikings during the Viking Age. [1] Originally painted in bright colors, these stones served as both grave markers and commemorative monuments. [1]
