Alby, Öland

Alby is a village on the island of Oland, Sweden, with one of the oldest settlements on the island, dating to the Mesolithic era around 7000-6000 BC. The earliest settlers, known archaeologically as the Alby People, built wooden huts on the edge of a prehistoric lagoon and subsisted by hunting, fishing, and gathering. The nearby Hulterstad grave field contains over 170 burials spanning the Bronze Age through the Viking period. The Alby Mesolithic village contributed to the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the Stora Alvaret landscape.
