Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

(4500-3000 BC) A Neolithic subterranean structure hewn into soft globigerina limestone in Paola, Malta. The Hypogeum features three superimposed underground levels and is thought to have served as both a sanctuary and necropolis, with archeological evidence documenting the remains of over 7,000 individuals [1]. It represents one of the best preserved examples of the Maltese temple building culture that also produced the Megalithic Temples and Xagħra Stone Circle [1].
