Teatro Romano

The Roman Theatre of Aosta (Teatro Romano) is an ancient theatre in the city of Aosta in the Aosta Valley, northern Italy, built during the Julio-Claudian dynasty [1] [2] [3]. Its imposing 22-metre-high facade wall remains towering over the surrounding urban area [1] [4]. The semicircular cavea and stage were enclosed within a rectangular perimeter wall -- an unusual design among Roman cities, positioned near the Porta Praetoria to facilitate crowd movement [4] [5]. Substantial restoration was carried out in the 1930s under archaeologist Pietro Barocelli, and the theatre continues to host performances today [4] [6] [7].
