GuatemalaA small Maya settlement 2 km northeast of the major centre of Piedras Negras, along the Usumacinta River in Guatemala's Peten department. Occupied from c. 500 BC through the Terminal Classic period (c. 1100 AD), the site sat at a critical portage point where rapids made river navigation impossible, with its natural bay serving as a calm harbour for canoes. Over 40 stone bollards showing heavy mooring wear attest to its role as a transshipment hub. A carved stone fragment naming Ha' K'in Xook, the sixth ruler of Piedras Negras (767-781 AD), confirms the site's political ties to its larger neighbour.
