Acrópolis Aguateca

Aguateca is a Maya archaeological site located in northern Guatemala's Petexbatun Basin in the department of Petén [1] [2]. The center was occupied from approximately 200 B.C. until about 800 A.D., when the city was attacked and ransacked [1] [3]. Aguateca sits on top of a 90 metres (300 ft) tall limestone bluff, creating a highly defensible position [1]. An extensive system of defensive walls surrounds the city [1] [3]. The city was completely abandoned, with a 6-metre (20 ft) tall temple left unfinished and the city center destroyed by fire [1] [2]. The ruins are considered among the best preserved in Guatemala [1].
