Rhamnous

Rhamnous was a fortified ancient Greek deme on Attica's northeast coast, about 55 km from Athens, guarding the Euboean Strait. Its sanctuary of Nemesis, the avenging goddess, was the most important in Greece. Two temples stand in the sanctuary: an earlier one from the late 6th century BC and a larger Doric peripteral temple built after the mid-5th century BC with 6 by 12 columns. The fortress served as an Athenian military garrison, and during the Peloponnesian War it provided safe passage for food supplies from Euboea. Remains include defensive walls with square towers, house foundations, a theatre, and funerary monuments lining an ancient road.
