Kalkrieser Berg

The Kalkrieser Berg (157 m) is a hill in Lower Saxony where the Varusschlacht Museum and Park opened in 2002 to preserve the likely battlefield of the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD). In 2004 it became the first archaeological museum honored with the Europa Nostra Award. The park encompasses 24 hectares of the historical landscape where Germanic tribes ambushed Roman legions in the narrow passage between the hill and the Grosses Moor bog. Ongoing excavations continue to uncover Roman military artifacts and human remains.
