Kalkriese

Kalkriese is the probable site of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD), where Germanic leader Arminius ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions under Varus. The site was identified in 1987 when British officer Tony Clunn discovered Roman coins and sling bolts using a metal detector. Excavations have yielded over 6,000 Roman finds including a famous silver-coated iron cavalry face mask, 2,000 coins, weapons, and skeletal remains along a narrow corridor between the Kalkrieser Berg and a great bog.
