Hartberg Megalithic Tomb

A late Neolithic gallery grave erected around 3000 BC on the western slope of the Hartberg near Schankweiler, approximately 10 km southwest of Bitburg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is the only visible Neolithic collective grave in Rhineland-Palatinate. The tomb consists of two sandstone chambers: a main chamber measuring approximately 2 x 1.2 m and an antechamber connected by a circular opening of around 70 cm diameter. Excavations uncovered human bones, clay vessel fragments, flint knives, arrowheads, a stone axe fragment, and an elongated stone stele. The tomb was used for multiple generations of farming families over more than a thousand years, though its stones were later quarried during the Iron Age and Roman period.
