Woodcutts Settlement

A late Iron Age to Romano-British farmstead on Cranborne Chase, Dorset, excavated by Augustus Pitt Rivers in 1884-85. The 1.6-hectare site features a roughly circular enclosure of about 300 feet diameter defined by a bank and external ditch, with three outer enclosures and two trackways. Christopher Hawkes later identified three phases of occupation from the late Iron Age through the late Roman period. Notable features include two extraordinarily deep wells -- one reaching 136 feet and another 188 feet deep. The site is a scheduled monument.
