Hunsbury Hill

An Iron Age hillfort 3 km southwest of Northampton, also known as Danes Camp, with defences built between the 7th and 4th centuries BC. The 1.6-hectare site features a deep ditch originally 8 metres deep and vitrified ramparts -- a rare phenomenon in England where the entire inner rampart was purposely burnt at intense heat. Excavations uncovered over 300 pits, 159 quern stones, the decorated Hunsbury Scabbard, bronze brooches, and evidence of a chariot burial, forming one of the largest Iron Age artifact collections in the Midlands. It is a scheduled monument.
