Maxta

Maxta is an Early Bronze Age settlement and necropolis in the Sharur District of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Azerbaijan. The tell site (Maxta-I) covers approximately 0.78 hectares and stands 4 m high. Excavations in 1988-89 uncovered circular Kura-Araxes houses with furnishings intact, and a 2006 season exposed superimposed circular dwellings with hearths and whole vessels. Agricultural tools for grain threshing confirm a settled farming community. A separate ancient necropolis with pitcher graves lies on the left side of the Nakhchivan-Sadarak highway.
