Soyuqbulaq, Agstafa

Soyuqbulaq is a village in Agstafa Rayon, Azerbaijan, where in 2006 a French-Azerbaijani team discovered nine kurgans dating to the beginning of the 4th millennium BC, making it the oldest kurgan cemetery in Transcaucasia. The site is associated with the Leilatepe archaeological culture, believed to have originated from Near Eastern Ubaid culture migrations to the South Caucasus. The kurgans share a northwest-to-southeast grave alignment with Maikop Culture burials to the north. Notably, the earliest evidence of silver use in the Caucasus was attested at Soyuqbulaq.
