Burrough Hill is an Iron Age hillfort in Burrough on the Hill, 11 km (7 mi) south of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, England. Situated on a promontory about 210 metres (690 ft) above sea level, it commands views over the surrounding countryside[1]. There has been human activity in the area since at least the Mesolithic, and the hillfort was founded in the early Iron Age[1]. In the medieval period, after the hillfort was abandoned, the hill was used as farmland, evidenced by traces of ridge and furrow[1]. This ended in the 17th century when the parish was enclosed[1]. Since the 1930s the site has been subject to archaeological investigations, with renewed excavations by the University of Leicester beginning in 2010[1]. Rare decorated Iron Age chariot fittings were discovered at the site[2] and displayed in a brand new exhibition[3]. The hillfort is now part of Burrough Hill Country Park, open to the public and protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument[1].
