Aslantepe Ruins

A 30-metre-high archaeological tell covering 4.5 hectares on the Malatya plain in eastern Turkey, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. Occupied from the 6th millennium BC through the medieval period, Arslantepe's Late Chalcolithic palace complex (4th millennium BC) preserves evidence of early state formation and a bureaucratic system predating writing. The site yielded the world's earliest known swords, dating to c. 3300-3100 BC, excavated by Marcella Frangipane of Sapienza University.
