Ancient city in southeastern Turkey known as Constantia or Tella in Late Antiquity. Originally a Hellenistic settlement, it was renamed Antoninopolis under Septimius Severus (c. 198 CE) and finally Constantia under Constantine I. After Nisibis was ceded to Persia in 363 CE, the city served as the residence of the dux Mesopotamiae. Emperor Justinian I rebuilt its circuit walls with higher fortifications and additional towers, and constructed an aqueduct from nearby springs. Surface remains include traces of Justinianic basalt ramparts and an octagonal martyrium church. The city fell to Arab forces in 640 CE and was gradually abandoned by the 13th century.
