Alby, Öland

Alby is a village on the island of Oland, Sweden, with one of the oldest settlements on the island, dating to the Mesolithic era around 7000-6000 BC [1]. The earliest settlers, known archaeologically as the Alby People, built wooden huts on the edge of a prehistoric lagoon and subsisted by hunting, fishing, and gathering [1]. The nearby Hulterstad grave field contains over 170 burials [1]. The Alby Mesolithic village contributed to the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the Stora Alvaret landscape [1] [2].
