Sanisera

Sanisera was a Roman city on the northern coast of Menorca in the Balearic Islands, established as a military camp in 123 BC during the conquest by Quintus Caecilius Metellus. Mentioned by Pliny the Elder in Naturalis Historia, the city flourished between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD as a Roman port vital to western Mediterranean maritime trade, and was inhabited until the 6th century. Located in the natural harbour of Sanitja near Cape Cavalleria, excavations have uncovered Roman amphorae and four anchors within the bay. The site also contains remains of a 13th-century mosque built using Roman ashlars, indicating later reuse of the settlement. Active archaeological fieldwork has been conducted by the Sanisera Archaeology Institute since 2008.
