Biniai Nou Hypogea

The Biniai Nou hypogea are two Chalcolithic funerary tombs near Mahon on the island of Menorca, Spain, representing the oldest known buildings on the island. Their chambers are cut into bedrock, while the access corridors were constructed from vertical stone slabs forming megalithic facades. C14 dating of human bone from one hypogeum yielded a date of 2290-2030 BC, the earliest radiocarbon date in Menorcan prehistory. Excavations by a team from the Museum of Menorca recovered grave goods including ceramic vessels, bone awls, and radiolarite tool fragments, evidence of the island's first collective burial communities.
