Biniai Nou Hypogea

The Biniai Nou hypogea are two Chalcolithic funerary tombs near Mahon on the island of Menorca, Spain [1] [2] [3]. Their chambers are cut into bedrock, while the access corridors were constructed from vertical stone slabs forming megalithic facades [1]. C14 dating of human bone from one hypogeum yielded a date of 2290-2030 BC, the earliest radiocarbon date in Menorcan prehistory [1] [2]. Excavations by a team from the Museum of Menorca recovered grave goods including ceramic vessels, awls, and radiolarite tool fragments, evidence of the island's first collective burial communities [1] [4].
