Peñas de la Cerca

Penas de la Cerca is an Iron Age hillfort dating to approximately the 7th century BC, located near Rionegrito de Sanabria in the province of Zamora, north-western Spain. The site covers around 2 hectares on a strategic position controlling the middle Tera valley between Sanabria and Carballeda. Excavated in 2007-2008, it features complex fortifications with parallel inner and outer walls plus a top-hill enclosure, and a series of uninhabited tells constructed to prevent direct access to the settlement. Among the most notable finds are a large number of stone tools -- polishers, cutters, mortars, hand-mills, millstones, and loom weights -- reflecting Neolithic-era technology persisting into the Late Prehistoric period.
