Las Capellanías

Las Capellanias is a 3,000-year-old prehistoric funerary complex in Canaveral de Leon, Huelva, southwest Spain. Excavation began after road workers found a stela in 2018, led by the universities of Seville, Huelva, Durham, and Southampton. The necropolis contains funerary cists along a key communication route between major river basins. A third stela discovered in 2023 depicts a human figure with a headdress, necklace, two swords, and male genitalia, combining traits of both 'headdress' (feminine) and 'warrior' (masculine) types and challenging rigid gender assumptions in Late Bronze Age Iberia.
