Temple Wood, Kilmartin Glen

Temple Wood is a Neolithic and Bronze Age ritual site in Kilmartin Glen, Argyll, Scotland, that saw approximately 2,000 years of continuous use. Beginning around 3500-3000 BC with a timber circle, an oval setting of 22 standing stones was erected circa 3000 BC, none taller than 1.6 metres. One stone bears a spiral motif paralleled in Irish passage-grave art, indicating prehistoric contact between Kilmartin and Ireland. Around 2000 BC the site transitioned to funerary use, with burial cairns and cist burials containing barbed-and-tanged arrowheads, a decorated Beaker, and red and yellow ochre. Today 13 standing stones remain in a circle about 12 metres in diameter.
