Glebe Cairn, Kilmartin Glen

Glebe Cairn is the northernmost of five burial cairns forming a linear cemetery stretching 2 km through Kilmartin Glen, Scotland, dating to between 5,000 and 3,500 years ago. The substantial circular stone mound measures 30 m wide and 3 m tall. Excavations in 1864 by Canon William Greenwell uncovered a central cist surrounded by two concentric rings of upright boulders. Finds included a jet necklace of 26 beads with spacer-plates (later lost in a house fire) and a decorated ceramic food vessel, possibly imported from Ireland, now displayed at Kilmartin Museum.
