Dun Vulan is an Iron Age broch on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, originally situated on a freshwater lake but now on an exposed coastal promontory. Excavated between 1991 and 1996 as part of the SEARCH (Sheffield Environmental and Archaeological Research Campaign in the Hebrides) Project, it revealed an oval-shaped broch with a maximum diameter of 19.5 metres, walls surviving to 4.5 metres high and 4 metres thick with dual-skinned construction containing internal passages and chambers. Built around 150-50 BC, the broch was later rebuilt as a roundhouse around 400 AD, with the original entrance sealed and a new one created over the roof slabs. A medieval building was subsequently constructed against its northeast wall.
