Choquepuquio

Choquepuquio is an ancient Wari site in the Cusco valley, situated in Quispicanchi Province, Lucre District, near the village of Huacarpay and its lake, approximately 20 km east of Cusco. Dating from c. 400 AD, the site was occupied through the Colonial Period until abandonment around 1530 AD. It represents the Lucre culture, a highly advanced society with numerous ritual centres that thrived in the valley thanks to its favourable climate and abundant natural resources. Choquepuquio lies near other major Wari-era sites including Pikillacta, a large administrative centre just 2 km to the east.
