Waqutu

Waqutu (also spelled Waqoto) is an archaeological site in the Cusco Region, spanning the districts of San Jeronimo and Saylla. The name in Quechua refers to an apu (mountain deity) and a variety of potato. The site is historically significant as the location of andesite quarries that supplied building stone for major Inca constructions, including the massive walls of Sacsayhuaman fortress and the great palaces and temples of Cusco. These quarries continued to be exploited well beyond the Inca period.
