Wanakawri, Cusco

Wanakawri (Huanacauri) is a sacred mountain and archaeological site at 4,089 m, one of the most important wak'as of the Inca empire. According to Inca mythology, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo first sighted the Cusco Valley from its summit, leading to the founding of Cusco. The site served as a pilgrimage destination for young Inca men undergoing warrior initiation rites during the Qapaq Raymi ceremony. Wanakawri was a focal point in the ceque system, the sacred pathway network radiating from the Qorikancha Temple of the Sun.
