Woerden

Site of Castellum Laurium, a Roman limes fort built c.40 AD on the Lower Rhine frontier in the Netherlands. The garrison of approximately 500 soldiers guarded the Grecht river crossing through multiple phases, from timber construction under Caligula to stone rebuilding in the mid-2nd century. Seven Roman ships were discovered, including the 30-meter Woerden 7 freighter (wood dated to 163 AD). Finds include a parade helmet, a dedication altar to the Syrian sun-god Elagabal, and catapult stones. Now part of the UNESCO Lower Germanic Limes World Heritage Site.
