Nijmegen, located on the Waal River near the German border, is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands[1]. The settlement originated as a Roman military camp established in the 1st century BC[1]. In 2005, Nijmegen celebrated 2,000 years of existence[1][2]. Today it serves as the largest city in Gelderland province and the ninth-largest city in the country[2].
