Albaniana (Roman Fort)

Albaniana was a Roman fort and settlement on the southern banks of the Rhine river, approximately 40 km from its mouth in the North Sea, at modern-day Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands [1]. Built as part of the Roman Rhine limes frontier, the fortress controlled the confluence of the small river Aar and the Rhine [2]. The settlement is documented on the Tabula Peutingeriana between Matilo (Leiden) and Praetorium Agrippinae (Valkenburg) downstream, and appears in the 3rd-century Itinerarium Antonini [1]. The fort was surrounded by an earth wall with wooden poles, gates, and watch towers [1].
