Tropaeum Alpium

The Tropaeum Alpium (Trophy of the Alps) is a Roman victory monument in La Turbie, France, built around 6 BC to celebrate Emperor Augustus's conquest of 45 Alpine tribes during campaigns from 16 to 7 BC. Originally standing 49 metres tall with a rotunda of 24 columns topped by a statue of Augustus, it marked the boundary between Italy and Gallia Narbonensis along the Via Julia Augusta. Partially destroyed on Louis XIV's orders in 1705, it was archaeologically restored in the early 20th century and now stands at 35 metres. The adjacent museum houses a 1:20 scale model of the original structure.
