Taputapuatea Marae

Taputapuatea Marae is a monumental open-air temple complex on the southeastern coast of Raiatea, the second largest of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. Dedicated to the god 'Oro, it served as the religious and political center of Eastern Polynesia, where chiefs, warriors, and priests from across the Polynesian Triangle gathered for ceremonies. The site represents an exceptional testimony to 1,000 years of Ma'ohi civilization. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 9 July 2017, it was the first cultural site in a French overseas territory to receive this distinction.
