Tombeau de Merlin

The Tombeau de Merlin is a Neolithic megalithic monument over 5,000 years old, located in the Forest of Paimpont (identified with the legendary Broceliande) in Brittany, France. Originally a gallery grave (allee couverte), only three red schist slabs survive after the site was dynamited by treasure hunters in the late 19th century. A 12th-century tradition associates the site with the wizard Merlin, said to be eternally imprisoned here by the enchantress Viviane. Today thousands of visitors annually leave written wishes and offerings at the stones, maintained as a cultural heritage site since a 2008 European restoration project.
