Ruins of Ténès

Ancient Mediterranean port in northern Algeria built on the site of Phoenician and Roman colonies known as Cartennae. Founded as a Phoenician port in or before the 8th century BC, it fell under Carthaginian hegemony around the 6th century BC and became a Roman colony after the Punic Wars. Ruins of the Roman colony's ramparts and tombs remain, and the Roman cisterns are still in use today. Old Tenes, located 1.5 km southeast of the modern town, was later re-founded around 875 AD by Spanish colonists before falling to the corsair Barbarossa in 1517.
